How to Rank Poker Hands

Introduction

If you’re new to poker, then it’s important to know how to rank poker hands. In this blog post, we’ll give you a rundown of the value of different poker hands, from highest to lowest. We’ll also show you how to use your poker hands ranked to win the pot. So if you’re ready to learn more about poker, read on!

The value of poker hands from highest to lowest.

The royal flush is the highest-value hand

A royal flush is an ace-high straight flush, a set of five cards in the sequence ace-king-queen-jack-ten of the same suit. A royal flush is exceptionally rare and is therefore the most valuable hand in poker.

The straight flush is the second highest value hand

A straight flush is a five-card sequence of cards all of the same suit, such as clubs, diamonds, hearts, or spades; for example, Q♣ J♣ 10♣ 9♣ 8♣. Straight flushes are often referred to as simply “flushes”. If two or more players have a flush, then the highest card in their flush wins.

The four-of-a-kind is the third highest value hand

Four of a kind, also known as quads, is a poker hand containing four cards of equal rank and one card of any other rank (the kicker), such as 9♥ 9♦ 9♠ 9♣ K♦ (“four nines” or “quad nines”). If two or more players share the same four of a kind (on the board), then they will split the pot equally between them.

The full house is the fourth highest value hand

A full house, also known as a boat,[1] is a poker hand containing three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank, such as 3♥ 3♦ 3♠ 6♠ 6♥ (“a full house, twos over threes” or “two pair: threes over sixes”).[2][3] If two or more players share the same three matching cards (on the board), then they can split the pot equally between them if there are no other players with better hands; otherwise, all players with lower hands than each player’s full house lose their bets while all players with higher hands win an amount equal to their bets minus any amounts paid into side pots.[4][5]

The flush is the fifth-highest-value hand

A flush is a poker hand containing five cards all of the same suit, not in sequence, such as K♣ 10♣ 7♣ 6♣ 4♣ (“a king-high flush” or “a king-ten-seven-six-four flush”). If two or more players share the same flush, then they compare the ranks of their highest to lowest cards to determine who wins.

How to rank poker hands.

The royal flush is the highest-value hand

A royal flush is an ace-high straight flush, a set of five cards in the sequence ace-king-queen-jack-ten of the same suit. This hand is very rare – in most poker games, it will occur only once in every 649,739 hands or so.

The straight flush is the second highest value hand

A straight flush is a five-card straight, all in the same suit. For example, 5-6-7-8-9 all of the hearts. Straight flushes are almost as rare as royal flushes; they’ll occur about once in every 72,192 hands or so.

The four-of-a-kind is the third highest value hand

Four of a kind means you hold all four cards of one rank – for example, four 9s. Such a hand will occur about once in every 4164 hands or so.

The full house is the fourth highest value hand

A full house contains three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank – for example, three 7s and two 4s (sometimes known as “sevens full of fours” or “sevens on fours”). A full house occurs about once in every693 hand or so.

The flush is the fifth-highest-value hand

A flush contains any five cards all of the same suit – for example, Q♦ J♦ 10♦ 9♦ 6♦ (a “Queen-high flush” or “Queen-ten-nine-sex flush”). Flushes happen about one time in every 508 hands or so (just over 1%).

How to use your ranked poker hands.

The royal flush is the highest-value hand and can be used to win the pot

A royal flush is an unbeatable hand and always ranks as the highest poker hand. A royal flush consists of a straight from ten to ace with all five cards being of the same suit.

The straight flush is the second highest value hand and can be used to win the pot

A straight flush is a very strong hand that ranks just below a royal flush. A straight flush consists of a straight (five cards in numerical order) that are all of the same suits.

The four-of-a-kind is the third highest value hand and can be used to win the pot

Four of a kind, also known as quads, is a strong hand that ranks just below a straight flush. Four of a kind means you hold all four cards of one rank and any other card. For example, four jacks or four sevens.

The full house is the fourth highest value hand and can be used to win the pot

A full house is a strong poker hand consisting of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank, such as three 8s and two 4s, or three aces and two 6s. When multiple players have full houses, it’s generally the player with the higher ranking three-of-a-kind that wins, since ties on full houses are broken by kicker cards (more on kickers in Subsection 3.5).

The flush is the fifth highest value hand and can be used to win the pot poker face

A flush is when you have five cards all of the same suit(clubs, diamonds, hearts spades). Flushes are very strong hands in poker because they’re both difficult to make and difficult to beat – only other flushes beat them so if you flop full house or even quads you’re probably going to lose unless your opponent has an inferiorflushwith lower high card values than yours (see Subsection 2 for more details on rankings).

Conclusion

Poker is a game of chance and skill. The better you know the odds of the game and the value of poker hands, the better your chances of winning. Use this ranking of poker hands to up your game and start raking in the winnings.
